Akila City was founded in 2167 by Solomon Coe. Its diverse people are insistent upon their beliefs about freedom — resulting in gross income disparity without governmental support, societal stratification by order of ancestral migration, roving armed security guards, and openly carrying firearms everywhere. After more than 162 years, its unpaved muddy streets are pocked with puddles.
The city itself is surrounded by walls and guard towers, due to the hostile alien life present on the planet. In particular, the walls defend the population against the predatory Ashta, described as a "cross between a wolf and a velociraptor". [1]
These city walls were built in three stages around a massive hill. The Core district inside the first wall contains the upper echelon of society, consisting of older manors and memorials. Its center is The Rock, the city's main governmental building, with a medical facility on the ground floor, a bar and restaurant on the second floor, and the Marshall and Freestar Rangers reside on the upper floors. Midtown inside the second wall is the largest district, consisting of more modest homes and most of the businesses. The Stretch is the poorest ring adjacent to the outer wall. The spaceport was built upon a nearby muddy plain.
